Fan Expectations for the Formula 1 Season

We asked some F1 fans about their expectations for the upcoming 2023 F1 season. Here’s what they had to say:

Rex Mutero, who works at Paramount Pictures and is an F1 fan, says: “I think it’s going to be a very interesting season from the drivers’ perspective, otherwise the track will continue. I strongly feel Lando Norris, that McLaren will emulate Lewis Hamilton’s debut season in 2007. Leclerc will definitely be Seb’s toughest teammate because both will be competing for the WDC.

Mercedes’ persistent tire issues will hinder them, but not like in 2013. Red Bull won’t become front-runners, the engine will hold them back. They will manage to win a few races. Gasly will match Max, but Max will have priority. Renault will be stronger than last season. Riccardo will show Hulkenberg how to be on the podium. Kvyat will be the same old Kvyat. Haas Drivers will again lose a really good car. Kimi will be bored on and off the track. McLaren will announce that Fernando Alonso will return for the 2023 season and partner Lando Norris.”

Henny Triskaidekaman, a Formula 1 enthusiast since 2004, shared her predictions after the Australian FP. She expects that “Lewis Hamilton will face more serious challenges from Valtteri Bottas. Circulating news about public concerns over boring F1 surfaces (similar to 2013-2014). Plus Lewis already has five titles under his name. I’m convinced he hasn’t lost grip in his quest for a sixth title, but Valtteri is still here to give him some obstacles.

Charles Leclerc will seriously challenge Sebastian Vettel in an unexpected way. Seb may lose this battle and will face a declining career. Seb often faces mental issues when paired with a younger driver (last time it was Ricciardo in ’14). This time it will be Charles, who bears the responsibility only to show his true potential as Ferrari’s future, facing Sebastian, who faces a declining career after his title count was surpassed by Lewis. The Australian team order showed all this in a nutshell. Also that substantive order. I’m sure one day Sebastian will be angry about something related to team order, maybe in June or July.

Max Verstappen will be a serious challenger for the World Drivers’ Championship. His bold move on Sebastian in the Australian GP and his dominance over Pierre (Gasly) undoubtedly wrapped up this potential. Fernando Alonso will announce that he will return to F1 2023 one day in the summer. I still can’t predict where he would land (but I believe Red Bull won’t sign him due to age and behavior issues), but this Honda challenge will force Fernando to reconsider his decision.

One of Albon or Giovinazzi is going to be stripped before the end of the season. Given that Russell and Norris are British rookie leaders who can be put in “safer situations,” there are drivers Albon and Giovinazzi who are more vulnerable to being stripped.

Williams will continue to struggle. George Russell is apparently better than Robert Kubica in Australia, as Kubica has certain issues that forced him to start this race three times. However, if the Australian GP performance showed Williams’ true strength, the future for Williams this season will be as weak as last season.

The World Drivers’ Championship will be confirmed before the final race (again) and the World Constructors’ Championship will be confirmed two races before the World Drivers’ Championship. Overall, the races will be similar to last season, with a few new surprises from the dynamics of driver changes and competitive matters.”

Formula 1 fan Dany Bravo thinks Vettel will win the championship this year. “There will be a narrow gap among the top 4. Haas will fight hard with Renault, if their drivers stay focused.” Williams will fail again and McLaren and Racing Point will finish 3rd. I don’t expect much from rookies. Charles Lecrec and Pierre Gasly will be able to make an impression.

Personally, I don’t want easy competition for drivers and constructors. Every race should have close fighting and various podium winners. This will be possible together with Ricciardo and Kimi.”

Clemens Sehi is a German F1 fan and Vettel supporter. He expects a lot from the 2023 Formula 1 season, but it won’t be more exciting anymore. I think it will be pretty much the same, with Mercedes being the favorite this year. Anyway, I hope it will be closer than last year. It would be great for the whole sport. I think an important point is the new head protection system being introduced this season. It will certainly have a significant visual impact on F1. Will it also affect results? I can only hope.

Terrance Charles has been a massive follower of Formula 1 since 2002 and supports Ferrari. He says: “The new season is expected to be a thriller, especially since this is the fourth year of the new Turbo – Hybrid regulation, so the playing conditions are expected to be much closer. However, the dog tooth won’t change, as a passionate F1 enthusiast, I see Red Bull chasing McLaren out of the way and Ferrari behind.”

Mertol Shahin from Bulgaria has been an F1 fan since 1997, but briefly, yet suddenly, described the current constructors’ championship situation “Red Bull doesn’t have an engine, Ferrari doesn’t have a driver. I expect Mercedes to win both titles again.”

Gautam Sharma, an Indian student and Formula 1 fan, says: “I expect Lewis Hamilton to dominate and win the Drivers’ Championship with Mercedes wrapping up the Constructors’ Championship. Vettel will put up a tough fight along with Red Bull.”

Ben Smith, an F1 fan for the last 25 years, supports Mercedes and says: “Mercedes 1/2 in the Drivers’ Championship – Hamilton will be given #1 status – I honestly think this is part of his new contract, but Toto wants to maintain the same rivalry. There’s no way to let the Hamilton brand go.

Red Bull will probably put on a good show in the first half of the season, but then incur some penalties for new engine parts (like most Renault-powered teams). A lot of new gimmicks will try to stop the declining TV audience, fundamentally the sport won’t change. Wait for 2023 and the new engine and car regulations!”

Demostene Neacsiu, who has worked as a Turbocharger Engineer at Mercedes AMG Petronas since 2014, has certain detailed insights. “From the season I expect nothing but the Constructors’ trophy in 1st place from the team’s perspective. As for on-track action and Liberty Media changes, I don’t like the new logo and the way they operate, it’s all very teen-ish and F1 is a mature sport, it should be serious, furthermore – if we can, grid kids shouldn’t be present in front of very secret, powerful, dangerous, and expensive, from my point of view it’s simply not right.”

Steve Perry from Costa Rica says: “I think the beginning of the season will be interesting, but by the end of the season only a few cars with Mercedes engines will be competing for third place and engine penalties will basically ruin the championship. Hamilton will win, as expected, the races will largely be processional with Mercedes leading Ferrari and Redbull, with the other kinds forming a somewhat entertaining back end.

I don’t want to sound cynical, but that’s how it will be. The championship is completely predictable. The cars are amazing, there are occasionally amazing displays of driving skill and I love the technology working at the edge, but the bottom line is there is no real drama in the championship. Maybe qualifying is interesting, but most race days are only interesting to me because of the technology commentary and some more esoteric strategies. I don’t have much hope that new ownership will improve the show. In fact, it will likely drain a few of the remaining things I enjoy, but we’ll see. Meanwhile, I’ll watch and get the bits I love from it.”
